How Saved Runs Work in Interactive Fiction

Updated 2026-05-01

Interactive fiction is stateful: branches, inventory, relationships, and pacing all depend on what already happened. Saves are not a convenience feature—they are part of the contract between reader and design.

Common models

  • Account-backed cloud saves: best for cross-device continuity.
  • Local-only saves: fine until you clear storage or switch devices.
  • Run-based stories: each playthrough is a discrete “run” you can resume or abandon.

AshCamp and your run

AshCamp treats a story session as a saved run you can return to while the world remains active. Sign-in is part of how progress attaches to you rather than a disposable tab. For limits and upgrades, read free vs premium.
